2011 update

by Gus on Sunday, October 9th, 2011 at 6:44pm

The local elections have long come and gone, and by its actions, the current city administration has shown it is serious in protecting the Olotayan Marine Sanctuary. The Olotayan fishermen have confirmed that illegal encroachment into the marine sanctuary has stopped.

Powell del Rosario, a longtime supporter for marine conservaton who is an avid scuba diver and also an elected Roxas city counselor reports: "The artificial reefs near olotayan now houses a lot of fishes.. I have talked to the Regional Director of the Bureau of Fisheries about this and she has given me her commitment to give us 3M worth of additional artificial reef." It was Powell's diving team that initiated the project of artificial reefs around Olotayan island several years ago.

This is encouraging news for all of us and we will continue to campaign and disseminate information for the continuing protection and rehabilitation of the Olotayan marine sanctuary. Ann Guerrero

2010 Update

by Amber on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 at 7:29am

The annual 2009 meeting went well. It was held at Nonoy Rudy and Pilot Beloso's house. Unfortunately, the previous administration of ex-Mayor Bermejo held the Olotayan Marine Sanctuary as a low priority. The Class '69 members went to Olotayan and personally handed out the donated clothes, books and toys to the Olotayan kids. They distributed educational leaflets to build up awareness of the preservation of Olotayan Marine Sanctuary. They hope the new administration of Mayor Celino will prioritize and support the efforts of OLMASA Foundation.
